How Long, Ref?

The rules

Competitive games only

League, FA Cup, League Cup, play-offs and Europe all count. Friendlies don’t.

Five in a row

Five straight wins and the clippers come out. Draw or lose and it’s back to 0/5.

Penalties don’t count

You have to win it in 90 minutes or extra time. A shootout decides who goes through, but the game goes down as a draw, so the count resets. Liverpool beat Chelsea on penalties in the League Cup on 28 Oct 2026. It was 1–1 after extra time. No haircut.

Wins carry over

The summer doesn’t save you. A run carries on into next season.

Men’s first team only

Women’s, youth and under-21 games don’t count.

How fast it grows

About 1.25cm a month, starting from a 1cm cut. Prem records start in 1992-93, the rest of the Football League in 1998-99.

No five in a row, no haircut

Frank Ilett, The United Strand, won’t cut his hair until Manchester United win five on the bounce. What if every club’s fans had been doing it since 1992?
